CUBA LIBRE – Make the perfect one

1930s Make Mine with BACARDI LOWRESIn the world of cocktails, there isn’t a more refreshing or simpler drink than the Cuba Libre – or rum and cola with a squeeze of lime to the majority of us. But this humble rum, cola and lime is actually a cocktail with a legendary history. Inspired by the battle cry of the Cuba Liberation Army during the War of Independence in the late 1800s, the Cuba Libre has become one of the most popular drinks in the world. So, if you need an excuse to raise a glass, then make it today (Tuesday, 20 May) – Cuban Independence Day.
This classic cocktail was invented in the American Bar, in Havana, Cuba, in 1900 just after the end of the Cuban War of Independence. A soldier from the U.S. Signal Corp asked the bartender to mix the drink he saw the Cubans drinking, BACARDÍ Gold rum with fresh lime, and this tasty new beverage called Coca-Cola™ that the Americans were drinking. Raising his glass, he proposed a toast of ‘¡POR CUBA LIBRE! to celebrate ‘TO A FREE CUBA!’, and was joined in his toast by others at the bar. With the new taste, the name stuck and this Cuban-American collaboration went on to become one of the most popular cocktails with more than six million enjoyed each day around the world.
So celebrate Cuban Independence Day by making your own perfect BACARDÍ Cuba Libre. Fill a highball glass with ice cubes, squeeze and drop in two wedges of lime. Pour on 50ml of BACARDÍ Gold rum. Top with chilled cola and stir gently. Now raise a glass with a toast:  ‘¡POR CUBA LIBRE!

‘UBER’ LIBRE

To take the Cuban Independence celebrations further, BACARDÍ has teamed up with Uber™ to give Londoners a little taste of freedom. For one day only, on Thursday, 22 May from 6:00pm until 10:00pm, whether your friend is stuck at work or having a night in, nominate them for a taste of freedom by hitting the BACARDÍ Cuba Libre button on the Uber app. One of ten Uber cars and cocktail mixologists will then deliver them a free, freshly mixed BACARDÍ Cuba Libre right to their door.

BAT TAGGING

To celebrate freedom, BACARDÍ rum is also releasing its iconic bat device around the world as dusk falls on Cuban Independence Day. Head to Shoreditch Grind coffee and cocktail bar in London on Tuesday, 20 May to see and participate in the UK edition of the global series – an interactive LED installation designed by artists Hirsch & Mann. As dusk hits, the bats will emerge and appear to be flying, appearing more powerful and animated the darker it becomes. A complimentary BACARDÍ Cuba Libre cocktail will be given to each participating customer.
