Cachaça is a Brazilian drink which is the third most distilled spirit in the world. This drink is made by distilling sugar cane juice which is fermented, and it is available in more than 4000 varieties. Cachaça, which is compared to rum, has generated many cachaça cocktails. Out of these cocktails, the Caipirinha cocktail is becoming more & more popular across the world. The Caipirinha cocktail is considered to be the national cocktail of Brazil and is made by mixing Cachaça with sugar and lime. The Caipirinha is also considered to be one of the most easy to make cocktails.

Popularity outside Brazil

Until sometime back, Cachaça production was solely meant for the Brazilian market. To promote the drink, the government of Brazil launched a strong export campaign and began exporting the drink to other countries. Now, the drink is being exported to countries like the US, UK, Germany, Canada, and France. Many top-rated brands of Cachaça are now available in these countries. The easy availability of Cachaça has increased the demand and popularity of the exquisite Caipirinha cocktail on a global level. Now, this drink has become one of the main-stream cocktails all over Europe and North America. Other cachaça cocktails, such as the Batida have also started to make slow, but steady progress into the bars of Europe and America.

The easy preparation of the tasty Caipirinha cocktail can be considered to be one of the main reasons behind the global popularity of the drink. It is certainly one of the most easy to make cocktails at home. Cachaça and Caipirinha are the perfect drinks for you to enjoy at a bar or at a beach. The global popularity of Caipirinha has risen to such a level that the International Bartender’s Association has given the drink the recognition of being one of their official cocktails.

Many Varieties available

Even though Cachaça is compared with rum, it is tastier than rum, owing to the fact that it is made from freshly fermented juice of sugarcane. A Caipirinha cocktail can be made in more than one variety. If you need a simple Caipirinha cocktail, you should mash together 2 teaspoons of sugar with lime which is cut into 8 wedges. Then place ice into your cocktail glass and add the Cachaça. You can make a modification of this cocktail called the Blackberry Caipirinha, by adding 2 whole blackberries to the concoction.

Various cachaça cocktails can be made by adding a fruit of your choice to the drink. A variation of the Caipirinha cocktail, called the Caipifrut, is also popular in night clubs and beaches outside Brazil. The highlight of this cocktail is the addition of condensed milk along with ice, crushed fruits, and Cachaça. The Caipiroska, which is made by adding vodka to Caipirinha, is another popular variation of the drink in Europe.

Legal action initiated

Owing to the increasing popularity of the Cachaça and Cachaça cocktails around the world, the Brazilian government has taken steps to protect the country’s Cachaça producers from the copycats in other nations. This step is initiated to preserve the authenticity of the drink and to limit its production to Brazil. The government has also approached the WTO (World Trade Organization) for obtaining protection for Cachaça  under an agreement that recognizes the Intellectual Property Rights.
