Located in the City Centre, The Dome is situated on the site of the Old Physician’s Hall designed and built in 1775 by James Craig, the celebrated planner of Edinburgh’s New Town. After major refurbishment, this listed building became The Dome which opened in 1996. The Dome incorporates The Grill Room and The Club Room (Bar/ Restaurants), 4 Conference Rooms, 2 Private Dining Suites and The Garden Café. The Dome has become established locally as a first-choice venue for meeting friends and colleagues for Coffees, Cocktails, Lunch and Dinner.
Spectacular, grand, stunning: but a few words to describe the Edinburgh institution that is The Dome. The feelings this establishment conjures up from simply walking by, leaves you desperate to wander up the red carpet, and into cocktail heaven. Boasting a number of rooms, each expertly decorated, your first choice will be where to sit and sip your drink.
The Dome is a cocktail haven. Looking around me I spotted so many intriguing drinks pass me by. The menu didn’t make the choice any easier, and with a selection of classic cocktails (long and short), champagne cocktails, martinis and non alcoholic options the decision is a tough one. I often like to measure an establishment on its ability to shake up the classics so I opted for a French Martini (when it comes to this drink, I like to think of myself as a bit of a connoisseur). I was far from disappointed, and would have to say that this was the best French Martini I have had the pleasure of drinking in Edinburgh. Presented in a martini glass with the perfect amount of pineapple infused foam on the top, the balance of vodka and Chambord in this drink was nothing less than perfect. Topped with two fresh raspberries, this cocktail was faultless. And at £7.50, it comes in a lot cheaper than many other George Street establishments.
Cocktails at The Dome range in price from £7–£9.50. If you’re looking for something more modest there are a range of beers, spirits and wines available too. The service is first class, with my drink order being taken quickly and the bill settled promptly. Having visited The Dome both during the day and in the evening they create an atmosphere that befits the time of day: evenings feature dimmed lights, whereas during the day light floods in through the back windows in The Grill Room.
This experience has cemented The Dome as one of Edinburgh’s great bars in my mind – I’m already planning my next trip back.
