Since it opened, the bar has become a firm favourite throughout the week drawing an after-work crowd who are into having a cocktail or two in relaxed, stylish surroundings without the usual rammy to get served in other West End bars. The spirits gallery is more than a match for the bartenders’ skills but, if you simply fancy a bottle of quality imported beer, you’ll not go thirsty either.
Social and Cocktail says:
Attached to the Grosvenor Hotel, Bobar suffers a little from Hotel Bar Syndrome but it makes up for it with the enthusiastic bar staff willing to help and obviously proud of their creations. A classic cocktails menu of 11 cocktails as well as 12 winter cocktails which included a cocktail named “Christmas Dinner” – Chopin Vodka, Red Wine, Carrot, Sage, Turkey and Cranberry (soon to be refreshed with a spring menu). Music was middle of the road (Phil Collins/Average White Band) but a good covers back came on later (two guitarists) who livened the place up and created a better atmosphere. Decor is wooden tables, booth style as well as cocktail perch tables. Interesting art around, a picture of the bar filled with naked bodies!
We concentrated on the Winter Cocktails menu and went for a Gingerbread Negroni – £6.50 – Bombay Sapphire Gin, Aperol, and house made Gingerbread Syrup. This was a very strong cocktail, bitter tasting with a strong Aperol hit, gingerbread taste wasn’t too strong. After a chat with the bar man, we discovered that the original drink has Campari, but he changed it to Aperol for the sweeter palate of the Glasgow crowd. I think this works better, as Campari would have been far too bitter.
Onto a Turkish Delight – £6.50 – Absolut Vanilla, Cacao Blanc and Rose Water. Smooth, strong tasting, sweet and very easy to drink. Very chocolatey tasting.
High Pear – £7.00 – Absolut Pear, Passion Fruit and Prosecco – great pear taste, refreshing and not too alcohol tasting, would make an ideal summer drink.
Tommy’s Maple Margarita – £6.50 – Jose Cuvero Silver, Maple Syrup, Lime and Cardamom – Great tasting margarita but didn’t really get the taste of the maple or cardamom. Refreshing and limey.
Banana and Almond Daiquiri – £7.00 – Havana Especial, Banana Liqueur, Almond Syrup and Lime – Strong and easy to drink, all the flavours showed in this one, delicious.
Finally one from their Classic Cocktail Menu – Russian Spring Punch – £6.00 – Absolut Raspberry, Cassis, Prosecco – £6.00 – another good one for a summer day, fruity, refreshing with a strong cassis taste. Very easy to drink.
