I’m a bit of a fussy one when it comes to alcohol. I go out to bars and clubs regularly, but I’m picky about what I have to drink. I had a bad experience when I was a silly 17-year-old at school in Australia, and ended up in hospital in resus. It was caused by drinking a bottle of vodka at a house party, and since then I can’t stand the taste of alcohol, yet I still like the funny kick it gives me and the way it makes my legs feel a little wobbly (I just know my limits nowadays). So when I drink, I need something sweet to hide the taste. Cue cocktails.

Anything super sweet I adore, my winter favourite is Oreo cookies, Baileys, rum and ice-cream, but my absolute favourite is a simple old favourite that never fails to please…the Pina Colada. Created in a Puerto Rican hotel in 1954, the Pina Colada consists of pineapple juice, coconut cream, and white rum. I’ve searched most of the bars in London for the best one, but the Trader VicsBahia’ (a Pina Colada with an exotic name…) never fails to make me sink back into my seat with a relaxed sigh.

The sweetness of the coconut and pineapple blends perfectly with the rum, and I love mine shaken with ice, rather than blended. It really is the ideal drink for anyone who doesn’t like the taste of alcohol, and I quite often ask them to use 1 oz of rum rather than 2 oz, so I’ve included my perfect Pina Colada recipe below!

Pina Colada Cocktail

Perfect Pina Colada Recipe

2.5 oz unsweetened Pineapple Juice

1 oz Coconut Cream

1 oz White Jamaica Rum

Shake the ingredients together with ice, and then pour into a glass and garnish with a triangle of pineapple and maraschino cherry, and ta-dah! You have the perfect refreshing cocktail for a cool summer’s eve. Also if you’re out somewhere and they don’t have what you want in a cocktail on the menu, just ask them to make it for you and 9/10 they will.
