One of the great things about summer has to be the drinks designed to keep you cool when the sun is shining. Pimm’s and Gin & Tonics are common options, but many different spirits can be used to refresh with great effect. For example, Courvoisier Cognac have recently developed a new garden party drink, the Courvoisier Cooler.

Courvoisier Cooler (makes one glass) CourvoisierCoolersCawston
25ml Courvoisier VS Cognac
1 wedge fresh lime, squeezed
35ml cloudy apple juice
70ml ginger beer

Method: Pour the Courvoisier VS into your chosen vessel, filled with ice. Top up with cloudy apple juice and Jamaican ginger beer. Squeeze the wedge of lime over the top and stir.

Taste

Apple and ginger are a natural combination and the drink is crisp, refreshing and a bit spicy, too. In addition to all of these flavours, the Courvoisier adds a slight, woody warmth without taking away from the freshness of the drink.

The result is a drink that cools you down, but that still has some warmer elements to it, which makes it perfect for a late summer day or maybe even early Autumn. That said, I could enjoy it all year round.

But Wait, There’s More!

I recently came across a product from Cawton Press a mixture of apple juice and ginger beer. Whilst writing this article, I thought of using it in this cocktail as a substitute for the separate apple juice and ginger beer.

As there is no still apple juice in this version, it is livelier and more effervescent. It also tastes a bit more fiery and the apple is slightly tarter. Nonetheless, it is quite refreshing and oh so tasty; in my opinion, this is even more well-suited to the early Autumn than the previous drink, as the extra warmth reminds me of the coming cocktail season of winter warmers and spiced mulled ciders.

In Conclusion

Both of these drinks are rather tasty: the original is perfect as a summer pick-me-up and the Cawston Press is better for a little later in the year. The Cawston Press also makes a rather tasty drink on its own, for those who prefer a beverage of the non-alcoholic variety.

Courvoisier VS Cognac is available from  al major grocery stores – RRP £23.79 for 70cl
Cawston Press Sparkling Apple Ginger Beer is available from Waitrose for around £2.50 for 70cl.
