French 75 cocktailThere are few things in life that mark a special occasion quite like a tray of Champagne Cocktails. Nothing adds a touch elegance to an event quite like a well-made Bellini cocktail, a lively Bucks Fizz or a sophisticated French 75. Now, when I say “special occasion” I believe one can be quite liberal with this term (I, for way of illustration, refer to Friday as a “special occasion!). There exists a fantastic array of Champagne Cocktails and this seems to be growing on a weekly basis. Champagne, once the exclusive mainstay of the rich and famous, has become increasingly accessible to people in recent years, both in terms of price and variety. Indeed, the UK, against the backdrop of a deep recession, has witnessed double digit percentage growth in Champagne sales over the last 5 years.

In the UK today, many of the top selling Champagnes are still the big brands we have come to know, including; Moet & Chandon, Lanson and Veuve Clicquot, but you  will now find that competing with these brands are Champagnes exclusive to certain supermarkets, such as Etienne Dumont and Andre Carpentier. Such bespoke brands have come to be universally respected  and represent an excellent quality to value ratio for consumers, which in turn has helped fuel the popularity of Champagne Cocktails.

To help encourage you to experiment with a few of the less “well-known” Champagne Cocktails, we have put our heads together and come up with Five that we urge you to try.

French 75

A delicious citrus-flavoured Champagne cocktail which packs a nice gin kick. Try to use a premium quality gin for the ultimate Champagne medley.

Ingredients:

37 1/2 ml Gin, splash Champagne, 10 ml Sugar Syrup, 15 ml Lemon Juice

Axis Kiss

A fantastic looking cocktail, the Axis Kiss wonderfully brings together deep almond and blackcurrant flavours, plus its pink blush makes it ideal for any romantic occasion.

5 ml Amaretto, 5 ml Crème de Cassis,75 ml Champagne

Rossini

Champagne and strawberry pair beautifully in this fantastic concoction. Looks great and tastes even better.

37 1/2 ml Strawberry Puree, Top-Up Champagne

Sour Witch

One of the more complex Champagne Cocktails, the anise and almond flavours work great together with the fizz of the Champagne bringing the whole drink to life.

37 1/2 ml Absinthe, 20 ml Almond Syrup, 12 1/2 ml Lime Juice, 4 Pitted Sour Cherries, Champagne, Grated Nutmeg

Lanesborough

For those who like their cocktails fruity this is an ideal choice with orange, cranberry and passion fruit coming together for a truly fruit-filled taste sensation. Also has an amazing red hue.

20 ml Grand Marnier, 20 ml Cranberry Juice, 20 ml Passion fruit Juice, 60 ml Champagne, Orange Spiral Twist

TIP

When making Champagne cocktails it is important to add the Champagne to the flute glass last. Pour the Champagne slowly over the other ingredients to avoid an overflow. Stirring these cocktails is not usually necessary, but when you do, stir slowly and gently. For best results serve Champagne cocktails right away.
