Caramel Vodka is a caramel flavoured vodka and is a key ingredient in the sweet Snickertini cocktail. Caramel is made by heating one of a variety of sugars and is best known as a confectionery product, loved by kids and adults across the world.
Caramel has recently become quite a popular flavour for major vodka brands, such as Smirnoff, who have launched a Caramel Vodka, which also features a hint of salt. Oddka, who are known for producing odd flavoured vodkas, hence their name, have also launched a Salted Caramel Popcorn vodka, which was one of the vodka varieties we review in our article on Strange Flavoured Vodkas. Premim vodka brand Stolichnaya have also got in on the act, with their Stolichnaya Salted Caramel Vodka.
Caramel Vodka is popular with mixologists when creating sweet cocktails or when adding a new twist to popular classic vodka cocktails. The addition of salt to most major brands of caramel vodka may come as a surprise to some people however, in France, many top chefs have been combining caramel and salt for a long time in many of their desserts.
Caramel vodka has become a popular homemade infusion, with cocktail enthusiasts simply infusing their chosen vodka with chopped up caramel sweets, and leaving to sit for 4 to 5 days. The drink is then strained, using a simple tool like a coffee filter. A pinch of salt is then added at the end, which helps to cut the sweetness and add balance to the drink. The caramel vodka will usually have a colour not unlike white coffee, once full infusion has taken place.
